Tomatoes, a fruit, is rich in Vitamins A, C and E. It is also rich in magnesium and lycopene (an antioxidant shown to reduce oxidative stress, caused by intense exercise).
Some free radicals (the negative byproduct of millions of biological reactions in the body) can damage muscle, cells and even DNA. By eating lycopene-rich tomatoes, we are recruiting a cleanup crew to take care of it. In addition, athletes can reduce inflammation by adding a little tomato to the daily dietary plan.
Ideas:
- 6 oz glass of low sodium tomato juice for breakfast
- 6 cherry tomatoes to the lunch salad
- 1/2 tomato, cubed, for salsa with your fish tacos at dinner
